Back To School Fashion
With September here already, it’s time to purchase this year’s school supplies and your back-to-school wardrobe. Living in Seattle, it can be quite difficult to know what one needs for the upcoming school year. Other than an umbrella and a Northface, sometimes it can be hard to incorporate many of the year’s trends with all the extra layers that are usually required for living in Seattle. Luckily for us, this year’s back-to-school fashion trends are wearable in the Northwest.
Layer Under Layer
During Fall and Winter, especially in Seattle, it is a necessity to keep warm. This is where one of the season’s hottest looks, layering, comes in. It’s all about mixing different prints and cozy textures. One of the best ways to rock this trend is buy mixing plaid and knits. Pairing tanks, sweaters, and winter accessories in a variety of ways will keep warm you warm throughout the school day.
Billy’s Jeans
Whether male or female, your back to school shopping is not complete without a pair of black skinny jeans. These ultra-slimming pants are coming back in a chic way. Rock a casual look with a trendy cropped jacket and booties, or dress it up with a pair of simple black heels and a lace top. For guys this trend is great with a hoodie and a sleek pair of lace-ups.
On Top of Denim
For a nice casual outfit pair a denim top with nice pair of shorts and khakis but denim on denim is recommended.
Along with the black skinny jeans trends, jean tops and jackets can be found in stores everywhere. A denim jacket is great to just throw on in the morning when you’re running late for class. Best matched with a nice pair of cargos or a skirt, this versatile trend be dressed up or down.
Dressing for school is all about being cute and comfortable at the same time. The one of the best parts of school is
being able to express yourself through style. With these trends you’ll definitely be on everyone’s best dressed list
all year round.
Other Trends to Shop For
1.Lace
2. Lots and lots of polka dots
3. Crop Jackets
4. Plaid
5. Animal Print
Swapping Fashion
Last night was the first ever Swapping Spree of Seattle Consignment Boutique owner and Wardrobe Stylist Tannya Bernadette. Over the past 3 months I have had the opportunity to intern for her. The spree was held at Club Sur in Seattle's SoDo district. 55 fashionistas were invited to not only the swap but to take part in free massages, hair styling, and make-up.
The idea of the swap was that woman would bring in a certain number of items to be swapped and that same number would be however many times they would be able to take home. The swap it self was an amazing way to score great labels and designers such as Express, Ann Taylor, Betty Johnson, Coach, and Diane von Furstenburg. The great catch was that you could swap out 10 items for more name brand things when you purchased your ticket which was only $25. Tannya was genius for coming up with the concept.
As an intern my duties included the raffle (some raffle items were jewelry from Kate Bosworth's line Jewel Mint and coupons for Kim Kardashian's Shoedazzle). Also me and fellow Mountainview alumni Josh Pellow were in charge of setting up the swap. The best part of the Swapping spree was that all the clothes not used were donated to Seattle's Jubliee Woman's Store and all proceeds from the tickets when to help kids get scholarships for college. An event is always amazing when you can give back and shop. My favorite part was the amazing 17 items I got to add to my wardrobe.

Babies and Beyonce
Last night on the VMA's Beyonce announced to the world that she would be expecting her first child with rapper Jay-Z. According to some reports the child is expected be to due sometime in March or February of next year. Beyonce's upcoming role in the remake of A Star Is Born is still uncertain. The movie starring screen legend Client Eastwood was expect to start filming around February. The role expected to make the "Single Ladies" singer and Oscar winner is still up in the air. Hope ends well! B's baby is surely well overdue!
Walls of Inspiration?!?
If you walk into my bedroom you'll be bombarded by all of the magazine covers and celebrity photos on my walls. As an aspiring fashion journalism I feel it's necessary to stay up to date with all the latest celebrity news mainly due to the fact that a lot of what fashion is comes from what singers and actors wear. It's not even that I'm obsessed with the woman that are walls but that I'm often I'm inspired by them when it comes to what I want to wear or what I want to do. When I leave to work or school in the morning sometimes I'll look at a picture of Katy Perry and think; Today with this outfit maybe I'll be more girly and bubbly. Some people might see it as weird but I just see as new way to be confident and show a little more pizzazz.

Rolling Stone
I will admit that I never really paid much attention to Emma Stone in Superbad but when a saw the buzzing redhead in House Bunny there was no denying that she was hilarious. Her fire red hair and her spunky charismatic personality Emma has become the new "It Girl" in Hollywood and fashion. Emma can always been seen on the red carpet rocking a short fun dress that show of her pizzazz and long legs. Known for being more comfortable in jeans and a tee shirt Stone can look just glamours in a designer dress. No matter what this big eyed beauty is wearing she sure to keeps us laughing and rolling till the ending credits.

Overlooked the Throne
Yesterday during my free time I decided I would see what all the hype was about surrounding Kanye and Jay-Z's new album. For those who don't know I've been a die hard Kanye fans since debut with College Dropout. The album is full of clever rhymes with hype beats. Because I not much of a Jay fan I kinda surpassed a lot of his flows but I will admit I was expecting a lot more from the hip hop superstars. I felt like some of the songs were nothing new for the duo. I fell in love few tracks including Made in America featuring Frank Ocean and Niggas in Paris. Overall I give it a B+!

Sultry Senior?!?
Senior year starts for me in less than two weeks and 18th birthday is right around the corner. Seeing how fast my junior year went by I'm worried that this year will do the same meaning this time next year I'll be officially on my own for the first time. Mid August I finished my personal fashion guide (my own fashion inspiration book I make every school year) and most of the images were far from my fashion norm. After spending all summer experimenting with looks drawing most of my inspiration from Solange Knowles. I digging the whole natural sultry look this year hair and all wish me luck!

Shopping Thrifty
The most noticeable thing about the world fashion is the constant recycling of trends. Flip through any of magazine or designer look book and you’ll realize you’ve scene those same exact pieces on store mannequins about two years previously. Because this fact is dually noted I find it unnecessary to spend more than $15 dollars on an item of clothing or an accessory. Most of my wardrobe consists of sales rack and thrift store finds. Being a high school student I sometimes find it hard to score enough cash to by new pieces. This is why I opt I find better and more unique pieces at consignment, flea markets, and thrift stores.
Tish’s Tips for Shopping Thrifty
1. Make a list of the type of items your searching for before you get to the store. Sometimes it can be overwhelming with all of the great finds scattered all around the store.
2. Be open to trying new things. The best part of thrift shopping is finding unique items that no one else you know may have in their closets.
3. Make sure to clean the items before you wear them. Some of the items are old and have been worn or tried on by name people. My rules for clothing is two washes before being worn out in public. With shoes and purse I used a disinfectant spray before I use them.
4. Try on things before you buy them. This gives you the chance to see how it looks on you and while trying things on make sure to check zippers and buttons (often times prices are reduced for broken zippers and buttons). Some of these type of things may not be visible on hangers.
The best part of shopping secondhand is the almost certain guarantee that no one you know will have something like it. My favorite thing is you’ll never know what you’ll find I’ve found amazing things tffrom Harlow and Marc Jacobs. I think it’s fun mixing the new and old, it gives whole new life to one’s wardrobe.

No more summer please!!!

Living in the state of Washington since the age of 3 I’ve become accustom to the frequent rain showers. With this said I absolute hate summer weather. If I had the choice on sunny days to go out I would stay inside hidden in my bedroom with the curtains drawn. It may seem like I’m a vampire but I just don’t like being constantly hot and dying for water. I love summer in the fact that I get to wear short shorts and show off my legs but I’m much more content in skinny jeans, Uggs and a sweater. So today when I got off work and my boss told me it was 75 degrees outside I was pissed. On top of a two hour bus ride home, forgetting my water at work, and wearing jeans black booties and a blazer I was screwed.

Lights on Big Sean
For the past week or so the only songs I've been listening to are from rapper Big Sean. After downloading his album (Finally Famous) I actually became a really big fan. When I was reading his article in Vibe magazine a few months ago I realized he was pretty smart on top of being handsome of course. Looking at his recent interviews and photo shoots the dude is pretty fashionable. Not only does he known how to work a fitted cap his style matches his one of a kind flows.

Nicole's Magical Shoes

Today while at my friend Nicole's house we decided it would be fun to play dress up in all her formal dresses. While going through her amazing shoe collection she picked out a pair of sparkly 4 inch silver shoes. The shoes were a pair purchased from DSW for a family wedding. When I tried them on I instantly felt like Cinderella. It's amazing what a pair of shoes can do for a girl and her confidence.

Fashion Books A to Z

Since about the ninth grade I’ve had a hobby of reading fashion autobiographies and how-to’s. During my recent internship with Seattle wardrobe stylist Tannya Bernadette I noticed she had quite an impressive library of fashion books. Yesterday while organizing her books I came across celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe’s book From A to Zoe. Last night while reading it on the 2 hour bus ride home I got to thinking about how not fashion but style is created. Through visuals and the gift of god of course I have inherited the gift I combining unusual pieces to an outfit that no other person would it went with,
Back to fashion books I finished reading Rachel Zoe’s and I began to toying with the idea of revamping my own personal style. I noticed that I have a knack for buying the craziest dress and handbags (Shannon would say). Since I finished that book in one night I’m off to reading Victoria Beckham’s personal style guide. Two chapters in I must say she knows her stuff especially when it comes to the art of buying jeans. My favorite part so far is when she claims she just got lucky “If you look at me I have quite normal hair, body type, I just simply got lucky”.
The Fashion Inspiration of Carrie Bradshaw

When my friend Shannon sparked the idea of me working at a fashion magazine back in eighth grade I had never put two and two together. It never dawned on me that every day hundreds of fashionable woman wake up every morning to go write for a magazine. When I began watching Sex and the City a few years ago I thought how fabulous it must be to be Carrie Bradshaw. My already large eyes grew 3x bigger when saw her sporting a new cleverly ensemble or when she question her stint as a “sexy in woman in the city”. I’ll never forget the episode when she got the call from the Vogue editor Edith to be a writer for the magazine. It was this moment when the start aligned for me I wanted be Carrie Bradshaw.

Fashion and Connections
One of the first lessons a person learns about the fashion world is it’s all about connections. A few days ago I met with my friend who runs his own fashion company who needed a lesson on how the game of fashion works. I decide since I had been recently assigned to write a back to school article on fashion trends it would be good idea to his line. So I asked my editor if featuring the company would be okay to my surprise she said yes. Then with my internship with a Seattle wardrobe stylist and boutique owner I learned she needed help finding someone from Fashion Network Seattle to cover the event. What would be the odds that I also intern there today. The strangest thing to me is that I never thought I’d be the one with skills or the connections.

Amy Winehouse Fashion Icon?

Most of us have already heard the news that singer song writer Amy Winehouse passed away on July 23, 20ll. Over the passed five years the singer definitely left her impact on both the fashion and music world. Her critically acclaimed album Back To Black which dropped in January 2007 was a mixed of 50's and 60's styles of music. Her famous Beehive hairdo another was yet another take on sixties culture. With her London hipster style mixed with designers duds she was often could be found wearing dresses belted at the waist with a neatly tied banana around her midnight black hair. Though her talents my have overshadow by her addiction she will surely be missed.

Death of Hip-Hop

Since I was a little girl I’ve been fascinated with the world of hip-hop. I remember staying up late watching Behind the Music of such legends like N.W.A and Run-DMC. Today I visited the EMP (the music and sci-fi museum in Seattle) with my dad and younger siblings. In one of the exhibits you got to look back on how a genre of music was created. Hip-hop has had such a tremendous aspect on black culture. Though I didn’t grow up in Brooklyn or Compton I could help but to become intrigued by what they were saying. Artist like Tupac and Nas had become regulars on my I-pod.
During an documentary on hip-hop rap pioneer KRS-1 proclaimed that hip-hop was officially “DEAD”. The thing that got to me most was how many of the artist in the rap game refused to stay with the changing times as a new spin to the genre is added. In my opinion no music genre can ever be officially over. I believe as the years progressed and new artist emerged they added what I like to call “flavor” to an already colorful subculture. With new artist coming out for what seems like every week in the last few years many young and talented MC’s have added new sounds to old rhymes and melodies. Artist like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and in my mind Drake have already begun to make their marks in the history books. To those artist who believe that all a bunch of dance records and booty shaking please go listen to Lupe Fiasco or Kid Cudi and my favorite Kanye West. And rappers if you feel that the “young dudes” don’t know how to rhyme do what Jay-Z did become a mentor.

This Hollywood Lifestyle

Every teen of the 22 century knows that everyone is obsessed with celebrity. From reality show and twitter updates it seems that nothing is kept secret anymore. In the worlds of fashion a celebrity we the consumers are all hungry for the latest pieces, news and information. Due to something crazy that happened this morning I had the chance not have to travel to work in the city. While catching up on my favorite TV shows I finished the first season of one of my favorite reality shows starring Paris Hilton called "Life According to Paris". I watched the show in ahh wondering how it would feel to have every aspect of my life videotaped or photographed. I would constantly be in fear that whatever people wrote about me would come true. Though we do complain about celebrities and their lifestyle they give up a lot just for fame and fortune.

Why I Love Dresses and Rompers

Today was my first day of summer school sadly and I wake up like 10 minutes before class started. In a dazed effort to find an outfit for class I decided my best option was to head start for the dress section of my closet. Without much effort a could stay fashionable with only five minutes to spare though I did my makeup on the way to school it! The reason I love dress (and rompers) is I can just slip one on with a pair of boots and a blazer and still look like you had to brush your hair and teeth. What a genius invention from the fashion gods.

Fashion and Mac Miller???

So recently I was watching my new favorite show on VH1 called "Single Ladies" and the episode featured a little cute white boy selling mixtapes out his car. It wasn't until I saw him on MTV that I realized it was the talented MC Mac Miller. After watching him on youtube and listening to his music that I noticed he has amazing fashion sense for a dude!
